Local Council Heritage Incentives Schemes

The City of Adelaide operates a Heritage Incentives Scheme which provides grants to assist in the conservation of privately-owned local heritage or State heritage places within the Adelaide City Council area. Assistance is also available for design and documentation work relating to heritage values. For further information, contact the Council's Heritage staff on (61 8) 8203 7203.

Incentives are also offered by other councils. To find out if incentives are offered in your area contact your local council.

National Heritage Investment Initiative

National Heritage Investment Initiative grants range from $10,000 to $500,000 to assist in funding works to places listed on the Australian Government's National Heritage List, or entered on a state/territory government statutory heritage register (ie must be a State Heritage Place, not a Local Heritage Place). Priority will be given to places on the National Heritage List.

See http://www.environment.gov.au/heritage/programs/ for details, including an Application Cover and Guide.

Tax Deductions

The Australian Government allows tax deductions to be made for certain works carried out on income-producing properties through Section 53 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936. This applies whether the place is heritage listed or not.

Tax deductions may apply to maintenance and repair work on premises used to produce an assessable income. The work can include returning part of a building to its former condition, but work that constitutes an improvement will not qualify.

Depreciation may be claimable for improvements that directly relate to income-producing activities. This applies generally to plant and equipment only, but can include the building itself where it is an integral part of the working plant.

Deductions and depreciation are claimed within annual income tax returns. The most advantageous result may be a combination of tax deduction and/or depreciation. It is advisable to consult a financial adviser to discuss your particular circumstances.

Local Government Heritage Directions Funding Assistance

As part of the Heritage Directions funding initiative, the State Government has allocated additional funding over four years (2005/06 - 2008/09) for the conservation of local heritage. Approximately $580,000 has been set aside over this period specifically to assist local Councils in South Australia to:

  • carry out or review local heritage surveys
  • undertake Heritage Development Plan Amendments
  • establish Council local heritage schemes

Applications for funding assistance for the 2008/09 financial year are now closed.

For more information contact Senior Heritage Officer (Policy) Hamish Angas on (61 8) 8124 4956 or by email.
